Let there be の意味

「Let there be ～」は「～がありますように」と訳されます。

よく知られているのは、

「And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.」

という聖書の一文です。

日本語訳は「神は "光あれ" と言われた。すると光があった」になります。

「Let there be」は2つの文法が使われています。

文法

1. 「let + 目的語 + 動詞の原形」は「目的語に～させる」や「目的語に～するのを許す」

2. 「there is（are）」は there is 構文で「～がある」

※この場合の「～がある」は具体的なモノではなく、主に抽象的なものになります。

以上のことから、「Let there be light.」は「（神が）光があることを許す」＝「光あれ」になります。

他に let の使い方の例文をあげると、「Let me go!」があります。

意味は「放して！」です。

これは「私に行かせて / 私に行くのを許して」＝「放して」となります。

「Let me know.」なら「私に知らせて」や「私に教えて」。

「I'll let you know when I get there.」なら「着いたらあなたにお知らせします」となります。

Let there be peace in this world.

→この世界に（この世に）平和がありますように。

Let there be love.

→愛がありますように。

Let there be hope for our next generation.

→我々の次の世代に希望がありますように。
