「make a point of doing」の意味と覚え方｜「make it a rule to」は古い？

make a point of doing の意味

「make a point of doing」の意味は「～するようにしている」や「決まって～する」です。

「make it a point to do」でも同じ意味になります。

ここには自然の成り行きではなく、意識的に何かをするというニュアンスが含まれます。

例文

I make a point of reading the newspaper every day.

→毎日新聞を読むようにしています。

I made a point of spending Sundays with my children.

→日曜日に子供たちと過ごすようにしていた / 決まって子供たちと過ごした。

I always make a point of exercising.

→私はいつも運動するようにしています。

I make it a point to check my email every morning.

→私は毎朝メールをチェックするようにしています。

先ほどの「I make a point of reading the newspaper every day.」なら「日々の生活の中で新聞を読むポイントを作っている」というイメージです。

逆に、「～しないようにしている」の場合は「make a point of not doing」の形になります。

例文

I make a point of not eating breakfast.

→私は朝食を食べないようにしています。

言い換え表現として「make it a rule to do」があり、たまに単語帳などにも載っています。

しかし、こちらは古い言い方なので、最近はあまり使われません。

I have never forgotten that. Without it, I would not be where I am today.

And so, I make it a point to do the same whenever possible.
